The assets folder

Hi,

I had a couple of issues with the backups of my website a couple of weeks ago and whenever I restored them I noticed that the assets folder had about 18 different folders in it all with hexidecimal names with what looks like the same files in each. They all have 5 folders in them and several files for jquery. Are all of these folders supposed to be there? Can I eliminate them and if so which ones should I get rid of?
