Guidance for REST webservices

Hi

I’m wanting to build an iOS app and the application I am planning to build in Yii 2. As I understand it (I’m new to iOS app development) I’m going to need a web service to in order for my app to communicate, update, retrieve, push notifications to users. So I thought this would be a good time to use REST, although I wasn’t entirely sure?

If REST would be appropriate, would anyone have any good thoughts, tutorials, guidance on implementing it. I’m not expecting people to write it for me.
