You could speed the site up considerably using Nginx instead of Apache, especially with all those images on the frontpage. Nginx could serve all static content (and the application with PHP-FPM) much faster using much less memory than Apache, especially if the site becomes popular and has a significant number of concurrent users.

And if you have a “very huge and frequently updated database” I would recommend Redis, it’s really great doing all the counting then snapshotting to MySQL or whatever permanent storage you want to use.
