Creating Theme Vs. Editing Default Files

Quick question regarding themes: if I don’t plan on using multiple themes, is it still better to create a single theme, or should I just modify the default layout and css files? In other words, is there a reason I should still use themes? Is there a performance savings just modifying default files?

I suppose there is a bit of performance savings if you set application’s theme to null.
