On my messages there only appears an “E”.
So how can I set a picture as an icon?
My personal settings offer background images but no icon upload.

Go to your Yii profile page and do what you need to do 
Which probably includes you uploading your profile image…

So profile and preferences are separate but connected…
… or not.
Profile picture added okay, but I still only see ‘E’ here 
I thought that @CeBe changed it, but in the mean time you need to use your Gravatar account to set the profile image.
If you don’t have a Gravatar account and/or don’t want one, wait until it is fixed.

There is a bug regarding avatar sync:
I’d have no problem to upload the image twice.
But it seems one wanted to realise a more clever solution.
Fine that the bug has been identified.
Waiting for the fix and living a simple life as ‘E’ …
Oh, sh… now life is getting more complicated.
